2010 Summer Institute participant at INMED program
GRAND FORKS, ND —
Tribal member Sydney Haworth, Arlee, recently attended the Indians Into
Medicine (INMED) Summer Institute program at the University of North
Dakota in Grand Forks.
83 American Indian junior high and high school students
representing 24 tribes from across the United States attended the
six-week program held from June 6 ñ July 16. The academic enrichment
program offered instruction in math, physics, biology, chemistry,
health and communication/study skills to help American Indian students
develop solid academic foundations in subject areas vital to success in
the health sciences. Cultural, social and outdoor recreational
activities for 2010 included visits to White Earth, MN; Agassiz
Environmental Learning Center, Fertile MN; Sully’s Hill National Park,
Pioneer Daughters Museum, Cavalry Square at Fort Totten, ND; Valley
Fair in Minneapolis, MN; Minnesota Zoo and the Science Museum of
Minnesota, St. Paul, MN.
INMED, as part of the Quentin N. Burdick Indian Health
Programs, also provides a full range of academic-year support programs
for over 100 students preparing for degrees in medicine, nursing,
clinical psychology and related health professions. INMED has been in
operation for over 30 years and continues to expand its programs and
linkages to other Indian colleges and technical institutions in the
region.
