Itís Tourney Time

If you’re hoop fanatic this is the best time of the year. For the next month in Montana, high school boys and girls basketball teams will be in two-losses and you’re done hardwood court battles that will eventually result in one boys team and one girls team standing in each of the four — AA, A, B and C — classes. The Madness begins this week and ends on Saturday, March 11.

The Flathead Indian Reservation is home to two top ranked teams in the state. The 18-0 Ronan Maidens who hold the top spot in Class B and the 17-1 Arlee Warriors who are perched atop the Class C power poll.

District 6-B Tournament in Hamilton
The Ronan Maidens are undefeated (18-0) in conference and non-conference play. The Maidens only close game of the season was a recent on-the-road 1-point victory over Florence. The Lady Falcons (12-6) and Deer Lodge (10-8) are the teams that could provide the biggest roadblock to the Maidens’ District 6-B championship quest.

Ronan and Florence have first round byes and don’t see action till the Friday semi-finals. Ronan will play the winner of the Missoula Loyola (6-11) vs. Anaconda (5-13) contest. Florence will face the winner of the Deer Lodge (10-8) vs. St. Ignatius (0-18) contest. The winners of the two semi-final games advance to the Saturday championship contest and the losers move on to the loser-out bracket.

The top four teams advance to the Western B Divisional Tournament in Ronan Feb. 23, 24, 25 at the Events Center.

In District 6-B boys action the Loyola Rams (14-3) and the Deer Lodge Wardens (10-8) have first round byes and will suit up for the semi-final tilts Friday. The Rams will face the winner of the Florence Falcons (8-10) vs. Ronan Chiefs (8-10) game, and the Wardens will meet the winner of the Anaconda Copperheads (10-8) vs. St. Ignatius Bulldogs (3-14) game. The semi-final game winners advance to the Saturday championship game while the losers continue through the loser-out bracket.

The top four teams advance to the Western B Divisional Tournament in Ronan Feb. 23, 24, 25 at the Events Center.

District 14-C Tournament in Pablo at Salish Kootenai College
In girls’ action, the conference champion Arlee Scarlets (14-4) get a first round bye to the Friday semi-final contest. They will play the winner of the opening round game between the Charlo Lady Vikings (10-8) the Noxon Lady Red Devils (5-13). The loser goes to the loser-out bracket.

The other opening round games pit the Plains Trotters (11-7) against the Hot Springs Lady Savage Heat (6-12), and St. Regis (14-4) against Two Eagle River (0-18).

The top two finishers advance to the Western C Divisional in Butte Feb. 23, 24, 25.

The number 1 ranked Class C Arlee Warriors have only one loss this season, an early season 14-C Conference loss to number 2 ranked Plains Horsemen, who also have only one loss, a late season payback loss from the Arlee Warriors. Both teams are 17-1 but Plains was awarded the championship by a pre-season tie-breaker formula. As a result Plains will have a first-round bye into the semi-finals.

In opening round action Thursday the Charlo Vikings (7-10) will play St. Regis (7-10); Hot Springs Savage Heat (13-5) will play the Noxon Red Devils (3-14); and the Arlee Warriors (17-1) will play the Two Eagle River School Eagles (4-14). The winner of the Charlo vs. St. Regis game will play Plains in the Friday semi-final game and the two winners of the other opening round games will face off in the other semi-final game. The losers continue play in the loser out bracket.

The top two placers advance to the Western C Divisional in Butte Feb. 23, 24, 25.

• The Polson teams have one more week of conference play before next week’s divisional tournaments.
